Getting started with AI chatbots: a gentle guide for older Australians
In short: You don't need technical skills to use AI. Open a free chatbot, type a question as if you were asking a helpful friend, and check anything important with a trusted source.

Your first five minutes
- Choose a free chatbot such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Copilot. Use its official website or app.
- Type a question in plain English, like you'd ask a friend.
- If the answer isn't clear, ask it to "explain more simply".
Some chatbots also let you speak instead of type: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all list voice features on their free plans.
Useful everyday ideas
- Prepare questions for your doctor's appointment
- Write a thank-you or sympathy card message

Staying safe
- Never share passwords, bank details or your Medicare number.
- Be wary of anyone who asks you to pay for "AI" help out of the blue. That can be a scam.
- AI can be wrong. Check health, money and legal answers with a professional.
Common questions
Does it cost anything?
The free plans of the big chatbots are enough to get started. Only enter card details if you deliberately choose a paid plan.
Do I need a new computer?
No. A smartphone, tablet or computer with a web browser works.
